DavidCherwien David Cherwien has degrees in choral music, theory/composition, and organ performance from Augsburg College, Minneapolis (where he was named Distinguished Alumni in 2000) and the University of Minnesota. He has also studied in France and Germany. As a fellow of Melodious Accord, he studied composition with Alice Parker. A former student of Paul Manz, David has been known to often "play hymns under the influence" of this great master. Dr. Cherwien has served several churches as full time church musician in Seattle, Chicago and Minneapolis, and has taught at Elmhurst College, Gustavus Adolphus College, and Luther Seminary, St. Paul.
Currently he serves as Cantor at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, where his predecessors were Mark Sedio and Paul Manz. He is also music director for the National Lutheran Choir, based in the Twin Cities.
He lives in St. Louis Park, Minnesota with his wife, Susan, a poet and hymn text writer. They raised two sons, Jeremiah and Benjamin.
